Blind Staffie Finds A Guide In His Forever Friend

Jess Martin fell in love with an adorable Staffordshire named Amos who was born blind while volunteering at her local animal rescue organization. When she learned that he was having difficulty finding his forever family, she quickly welcomed him into her house. What began as a temporary foster home for Amos quickly evolved into the home that would forever impact his life.

Jess was concerned about Toby, her 9-year-old terrier, reacting to his foster sibling. Jess’s best friend was Toby. They’d been on some fantastic adventures together and built a wonderful bond, so the prospect of expanding their tiny family sounded a little intimidating. Toby and Amos’ friendship blossomed after a few days of uncertainty.

Amos had never lived in a home before Jess because he had spent his entire life at a rescue facility. Amos would bump into walls, grow terrified by TV sounds, and was even sick of the feel of carpet on his paws. Simple tasks, such as finding the water bowl, were extremely difficult for the blind puppy.

Toby was first skeptical about Amos, but Jess soon observed something extraordinary. Toby would nudge Amos in the proper direction if she spotted him straining to find his water bowl. What began as an occasional gentle nudge evolved into Amos receiving his very own guide. Jess and her family were aware that they had obtained yet another cherished buddy.

Amos was examined by an eye doctor as he grew older. It was determined that his eyes were most likely causing him daily pressure and agony, and that removing the eyes would be the most compassionate decision. Toby took up the role of Amos’ “unofficial guide dog” soon after the surgery.

Amos was nervous when he and Toby first went on walks together. The surrounding noises would frighten him, and he’d have to take regular breaks to lie down and regroup. Toby would immediately lie down next to him and wait for him to be ready to continue!

Hiking through the hills is now one of the furry best friends’ favorite activities! Toby guides Amos across the hills with body bumps and nudges, and if he strays, he helps guide him back to the path.

“They’ve formed a good rapport and are aware of each other’s limitations.”

Amos has learned the art of hiking, but he still has a lot to learn about socializing and how to socialize with other dogs. Toby will frequently act as a go-between during these encounters because many dogs are scared off by Amos’ inability to speak as a normal dog would. Every day, Jess and Toby work together to enhance his sociability skills!

Toby is unquestionably the best guide and bodyguard Amos could have hoped for! They had discovered a lifelong companion in each other.
